Hello world! Who I am and What I do
August 10, 2008
I write anonymously about politics here, starting today. I used to write comments at the Huffington Post, but I got sick of being censored. So, I decided to create my own little Post, an anti-Huffington Post. What do I mean by an anti-Huffington Post?
Well, in the interest of transparancy let it be said that I’m opposed to almost everything that Ms. Huffington is for — no doubt the reason why I was routinely censored at her site. But our political differences only highlight a more fundamental difference: I’m against censorship. I do not expect readers to agree with everything I will say. Indeed, the reason I wrote comments at the Huffington Post and not at a site where my views are more the norm was precisely to add balance to their forum. Left and right aren’t talking to each other; they are talking past each other. Moreover, there’s little room left at the middle — in that space occupied by most Americans.
We are being asked to choose up sides, but I’m asking my readers to help me to search again for the lost middle ground. Toward that end, let me commence by saying that I will not censor political ideas even about controversial topics as long as the discourse is civil and decent. If I cannot post a comment because it doesn’t meet my criteria of civility, I will paraphrase the comments and post them with attributions whenever possible.
Unlike Ms. Huffington, I welcome debate for I’m a genuine “liberal.” I am someone who believes that ideas need to contend, that we must hear them, so that the best ideas can make it through the chaos to the light. I believe that in the contest of ideas innovation happens.
People are not really debating the most important changes of our times. We are just calling people names. I’m trying to make a difference in a small way. I want to talk about ideas. I hope you’ll come along for the ride.
