When I Grow Up

December 3, 2008

When I grow up, I want to be just like one of these three ladies.  Any one of them! Eileen Ivers, Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, and Regina Carter.

This man is God’s gift to the violin.  I kid you not.  So much great stuff happens in France.

Beautiful Jazz & Toots

cinderella-liberty

I fell in love with the John Williams soundtrack of this movie many years ago  — does the early seventies sound long ago and far away enough?  And I’ve got to tell you, if you only know the music from the movie, you don’t know it.   The music by itself  without all the dialogue and movie noise, I say, the music to Cinderella Liberty is absolutely intoxicating.  And it’s been unavailable for a very long time.  I have scoured stores looking, ever hopeful!  I had looked in the bins not only under the labels of “soundtracks” or “John Williams” but also under “Toots Thielemans,” wondering if the legendary harmonica player had recorded this movie’s unforgettable love song somewhere on his own.  I was always disappointed.  Sigh.

But not anymore.  If you love a haunting melody, you’ve got to get this cd that’s been newly released after thirty-some years.  If you are a Toots Thielemans’s fan, you should drop everything you are doing right now and order a copy.

John Williams’s fans who know him principally for Star Wars and Indiana Jones will be very surprised and delighted I think to discover “Johnny Williams’s” jazz origins.
